Basil was a darling 5 month old puppy dumped at the South LA Shelter with his sibling Rosemary when a family decided to move without them. They were a tightly bonded pair and loved to curl up with each other in one big white fluffy mound with two heads. Unknown to us, they were infected with Parvovirus, a deadly virus that destroys a puppy's immune system. The next day, Basil began to act lethargic and he quickly became terribly ill. The next morning, he passed away. Rosemary, now alone in the world, received intensive medical therapy at the hospital and bravely fought and survived her illness

Rosemary recovered and soon appeared with Kathy Christopherson on a segment on CNN featuring her work with animal rescues and Dirty Dog Squad. Rosemary (renamed Mazel) flew to Boston to join a fantastic home where she lives with 2 Golden Retrievers, wrestles with Max a 19lb cat, runs he agility course in the backyard, and is so smart she skipped beginner obedience and is fast on her way to her Good Citizen certificate.

While we celebrate the joy that comes with rescuing Rosemary, a part of our hearts is left behind with Basil. Though we only shared a short time together with him, we were deeply touched by his beautiful face, his affectionate nuzzling, and his innocent joyfulness.
